What Does Spirituality Even Mean?

A few weeks back I found myself at our local Teavana picking up some blueberry iced tea’s for my girlfriend and I (I highly recommend them by the way!).  While waiting, one of the store clerks was busy giving me the sales pitch on all things tea, which they happened to sell in the store.  As he was explaining the different symbology you could get on the various tea kettles, he mentioned that his favorite one was with pine needles, which represented friendship, love, and spirituality.  Being that I consider myself a very spiritual person and am always curious about others beliefs and behaviors, well I just couldn’t pass this one up.  So I asked him what does that mean, spirituality?  His reply was, “Well you know, spiritual.  Like being a spiritual person and stuff.”  Interesting.

It had me thinking.  What does it mean?  Spirituality.  I didn’t know how I would describe it.  So of course I looked up the definition to see if I could glean anything further in my musings.  It helped somewhat, but I still wasn’t feeling it.

When I closed my eyes and meditated on it, it slowly came to me.  I had visions of Samurai saluting one another before charging into battle.  Knights swearing oaths of loyalty on their swords.  Honest politicians without hidden agendas, wait a minute… (what a crazy segway I know, but I can’t help how my mind works)… something about honor came to me, personal honor.  What was it?

A code!  That was it.  A code that I live my life by.  My very own moral compass for life exploration.  A self imposed code that I hold myself and no other too.  A tool for guidance by which I determine my actions.  That also accepted and appreciated others self chosen spiritual identities.  So while giving me strength to do what I feel is right for me, it also frees me from the need to judge others.  Good stuff, huh?

My analytical mind wouldn’t stop there though.  I kept digging further, trying to figure out what this code was made up of.  At its root, lay beliefs.  Beliefs woven together that form that code, that provide for the creation of my perceived reality.  Deep stuff, huh?  Not that I’m sure what the hell that even means, but that’s another post for another time.  I know there is loads more I could talk about with regards to what spirituality means.  But I felt this was a good starting point for now and I look forward to seeing where the explanation/conversations go.

Share your thoughts on what spirituality means to you.  Lets get this conversation started!  As always questions, comments, and snide remarks welcomed and appreciated.

I totally agree with you about spitituality. It is a moral code of your own to live by. Being in touch with who you truly are deep inside. Your authentic self. I love how yopu wrote, giving me strength to do what is right for me in my own life and not judging others. A guidance tool to help determine actions. Good Stuff. It’s nice to know that if you are spiritual and believe in you then you can really live as you want to live and find your bliss. Funny how you asked the man in the shop what spirituality meant to him and he couldn’t tell you. Did you buy the tea??

  2. This totally ties in with a realization that I and several friends have come to lately.

We can’t know the truth of what happens when our bodies die. What we DO know is that the body eventually ceases to exist, except as memories in other people’s minds.

So, who or what are we? We’ve decided to assume that we are spiritual beings who are temporarily inhabiting human bodies in order to attend school and complete unfinished business. Or even just to have a good time.

The minute we focused on being spiritual beings who happen to have human bodies, rather than being human beings who have spirits, it all kind of fell into place. I know it has made my path and my decisions and choices much simpler.

And it makes me realize, I AM spirit. I could no more not be spiritual than I could not breathe. Actually, that’s a poor example. I AM spirit, everything else proceeds from that.

Thank you for a very thoughtful essay.

  3. Hello Angie & Patricia,

    Angie,
I really liked this “It’s nice to know that if you are spiritual and believe in you then you can really live as you want to live and find your bliss.”
That’s it exactly! It’s almost like finding you own inner spirituality frees you from it all and allows for that experience of bliss we’re all after. You just have to stay on that spiritual path and sometimes that takes work. Or at least a higher level of conscious awareness, maybe??

    Patricia,
Welcome to our blog and thank you for the great comments and compliment. I really like your I AM statement. It’s so powerful. And what a tremendous realization once it’s truly felt and experienced!!

What or who are we? Great question. I like your and your friend’s assumption. I share a similar one. It leads into the next question of why are we here? And probably another posting topic for future conversations too. I love these topics because they just end up making me ask more questions and seek out more answers. It seems like a never ending cycle sometimes. But I suppose if it ended, that might be when our time here was done.

Thank you both for sharing your thoughts. I look forward to continued conversations with you and your friends!
    Mia

  4. Religion is for those who don’t want to go to hell. (Or something like that)
Spirituality is for people who have already been there.

I think I’m here typing this message at this moment in time for one purpose…To fulfill destiny. Everything happens for reason… Or does it? Is it all just random?

That’s the eternal question… Nice post!
    Peace
