An Age Old Question: Fate or Free Will?

Life is a highway.. But who’s driving???

Have you ever experienced one of those profound moments?  You know what I’m talking about.  The kind of moment that might last for only a few fleeting seconds or if you’re lucky even days.  It’s that rare occasion when everything in the world seems right, an almost symmetrical alignment with the way your life is going and the universe.   One of those ah hah moments.  It feels like the direction you have chosen for your life is in balance with the forces that sometimes control your life and typically feel out of your hands.  Ah yes, harmony and peace….

It’s usually not long after this experience occurs that life some how finds a magical way to knock you flat on your back.  Ah yes, frustration and anxiety….

You have to appreciate the whole Yin & Yang thing that life brings you.  You’ll be better for it if you can, but that’s a whole different topic.

Where is my life going?  What am I doing here?  Is it all up to me to decide or is there some greater force guiding me?  What’s the plan, kid?  As you walk down your life path, these questions surely must come up at various points.  At least I hope they have, but what do YOU think?                                 Pondering Angel

Personally, after looking back on my life and probably over-analyzing nearly every aspect, I have come to the conclusion or belief that it’s a balance of both fate and free will.  Each probably equally steering me down my path of life experiences.

I rarely understand how it’s playing out until usually after being able to reflect on the experience, and even then many times it’s beyond my current level of evolvement to gain any understanding at all.  But I always have this inner sense that my life is moving forward on some path that has some preplanned events in it, and while sometimes I may sit down and not move forward at all, or even take a step back from time to time, eventually I’ll get to where I’m supposed to be going.

An analogy that comes to mind is this:  Lets say I have to make a trip from Buffalo, NY (Home) to Los Angeles.  That’s the planned part or fate if you will.  But here comes that crazy spirited free will that sometimes gets me into trouble.  It’s up to me when I make the trip, how long it takes, and how I get there.  Might fly into Detroit for a while, then drive across some of the midwest just to see the beautiful farm country before hoping a flight from Denver to…well, you get the idea.

Now I’m not saying that you can’t change the plan and go an entirely new new path or direction.  Maybe you can, I really haven’t figured it out that far for myself.  There’s always room to ponder more, but that’s as far this spiritual wanderer has gotten.  And who created this plan that I’m talking about anyways?  I really don’t like the idea that someone other than myself did!  But maybe I really did that too…

What are your thoughts on the topic? Let’s get this conversation started, maybe we can figure it out together sometime!

  1. I deal with this part of life by remembering (and forgetting and remembering and forgetting…) that life is both a series of points, and it’s a wave. Just like quantum physics, it depends upon what you’re observing.
We habitually notice the points, and we conduct our lives as though we’re going from point to point to point. The truth is, we’re riding a wave, and a wave has ups and downs. A surfer can choose which part of the wave to address, stay on top, shoot the curl, drive through Kansas. But the wave is still carrying you.
Actually, I’ve always loved the analogy of the roller coaster. You can strap yourself in and close your eyes, you can raise your arms and scream. What is really dumb is to get out and lie on the tracks and get run over, and then blame the roller coaster.
We are the ones who initiate the ride, however that works. And I think it’s not so important to know who put the coaster there for us to ride. The important thing is to take responsibility for making it a good ride!
    Good and thought provoking article!

  2. Great commentary. I enjoyed your analogies. Especially the roller coaster. Personal responsibility is a huge issue/topic. I totally agree, its up to us to make it a good ride. Or when its a bad one too…

And while its not so important to know who put the roller coaster together, its an interesting concept to explore.

    Thanks again for your comments!

  3. OH MY GOD, I WAS READING YOU FIRST PARAGRAPH AN THINKING YEA, BUT THEN
THE NEXT PARAGRAPH SAID IT ALL-THEN U GET KNOCKED ON YOUR BUTT
I WAKE UP EVERY DAY THINKING, HOPING,PRAYING, WISHING MAYBE 2DAY I WILL FIND OUT MY PURPOSE IN LIFE–SADLY I HAVEN’T FOUND IT YET. BUT I GUESS THATS JUST “LIFE” A LIFE THAT I ACTUALLY LIKE–I JUST WISH I COULD DO MORE.

    Hi Stormy Kay!

That poses an interesting question and dilemma. What is my purpose or better yet, how does one find it? I don’t think there is a simple answer to that. But I plan to post further on that topic. Sometimes I think you might prevent yourself from finding your own answers to these questions by being so entraped in solving them.

    Thanks again for your comments!
